Finding a Balance ~ Ultradian Rhythms

Finding a Balance ~ Ultradian RhythmsIf you fill a bucket up to the brim with water, when you try to carry it anywhere it’s likely to spill over and you will get wet!

In the same way, if you don’t attend to the body’s natural need to have a break every 90 minutes or so (called ultradian rhythms) then the adrenalin levels have no chance to reduce and the stress will spill over – you will notice you have a headache, upset tummy, tense shoulders, perhaps feel irritable, clumsy, tired, grumpy, or resort to comfort eating. Do any of those signs fits you?

Oasis of Calm

Tune in to when your body and mind need a break and use your imagination to take yourself away for a few minutes. Why not just look out the window, drink some water, or chat with a colleague? Then you won’t feel completely frazzled at the end of the day! Don’t forget to breathe slowly for a couple of minutes to calm the nervous system down. Notice your thoughts, let them pass by, like clouds in a blue sky.

Oasis of Calm

Why not find an opportunity to use a relaxation technique or mindful check-in for a few minutes once or twice a day to keep you feeling calm and in control? You will notice how much more clearly and creatively you can think. Try it and you could be pleasantly surprised! You will find it easier not to slip into autopilot and those bad stress related habits and easer to maintain or develop the good ones! Keep that positive dialogue alive and tune out the critical bossy one!

Yoga, Pilates, walking, running, in fact any exercise or activity that you really enjoy and takes you away from the daily chores will benefit your mind and body and is worth doing on a regular basis. Having a regular massage to ease those tired shoulders is also great for maintaining energy and wellbeing.

You can still be alert and vigilant for your work but if you are finding it difficult, then you can create an anchor for this state – see the handouts on relaxation techniques so that you can get yourself into the zone for that meeting or task, or ask me to help you create one.
